Everybody has their own idea of the perfect holiday destination. Some people love the beach; others would do anything if only they could stay in a ski resort for a few days while others still would love nothing else than to go for a safari. There are thousands of great holiday destinations around the world. These are places that millions of tourists visit each year in search of a particular experience. After months of working hard for your daily bread it is good to simply forget about everything and head on out for vacation. But if you’re looking to take a break a get away, a multi-hour “road trip” may not sound particularly appealing. But don’t succumb to the fate of flying just yet! Here we recommend one awesome road trip that will make the drive so very worth it: London to Edinburgh.
The Olympics are over and the crowds have (pretty much) gone – now’s a great time to visit London. While walking around London is a must, renting a car makes getting to know the city and its surrounding areas even easier, and tees you up nicely to begin a road trip once it’s time to leave. If you need to book a hotel in London, try to find one that offers a deal or links out to car rental services as well. And make sure you find a rental car service that will allow you to drop the car off once your done in a different city. Because we’re headed to Edinburgh, baby!
Got your fill of Big Ben, the Tate, and the London Eye? Great, then it’s time to get in the car and head out! Hit the A1 on the east coast from London, and it’s about an eight hour drive to Edinburgh. But that’s assuming typical weather and traffic conditions, and also assuming you don’t want to stop to see any sights along the way. There’s a lot to see along the road between London and Edinburgh, and it’s pretty worth it to break up the drive and get to check out some of the interim towns. You’ll pass by Cambridge, Suffolk, Lincoln, York, Harrogate, Durham and more. The drive weaving through these towns makes it worth skipping the plane ride alone, but taking a night or two to explore some of them makes the trip truly memorable. York is a particular favorite, though requires a slight detour to stop through. Not a bad idea to spend the night and get a chance to see York for more than just a few hours!
While spending all those hours in the car on your way from London, you may begin to ask yourself, why Edinburgh? Well the answers are innumerable. Some of the UK’s most magnificent and history-laden castles can be found in Edinburgh. There is something about stepping into a fortress that is more than five hundred years old; it really is like going back in time. In Edinburgh, you can also let go of all your tensions and stresses by taking a visit to any of the numerous gardens present. The gardens provide tranquillity and untainted beauty that you can take in as you enjoy a divine picnic with your family. And if you love art then you will definitely love Edinburgh and all its wonderful galleries. The galleries here have works of art from the renaissance period as well as contemporary masterpieces. Royal Scottish Academy, National Gallery Complex and the Fruitmarket Gallery are some of the galleries that you should make a point of visiting while in Edinburgh.
So there you have it. Ditch the plane, get in the car, and head our for one hell of a road trip. The ride from London to Edinburgh promises to be a memorable one, and one that’s worth seeing from the ground.
