The idea of being washed away on a Caribbean island is certainly one that appeals to me; white sand beaches with blinding blue sea, hot sun and swaying palms …. bliss.
For a taste of this kind of paradise, head to the Dominican Republic.
Flying long-haul has its downsides, but this kind of holiday is worth every second on that plane. I’ve found ways to make long-haul flying that bit less stressful, and I’d certainly recommend pre-booking airport parking, eliminating the need for those expensive airport taxis and meaning you start your break in the chilled-out way you’re supposed to. Check out Manchester airport parking when flying from the North-West and see for yourselves.
Although all the Caribbean islands are special in their own right, the Dominican has that something extra, with stunning nature sites and plenty of history, for those with an eye for culture.
Of course, if you’re like me, the offer of that white sand, stunning beach will be too much to resist, and there are plenty running around the coastline, so no excuse for not doing a good castaway impression.
Punta Cana is one of the most popular hotspots on the island, with many all inclusive resorts to choose from, For those green-minded, try the Tubagua Plantation Eco Lodge or Barahona Coralsol Resort. You can get around the island easily with a good transport network, albeit running in a very laid-back, typically Caribbean style. I’d definitely recommend getting out and about if you can too, as there is plenty to see, especially if you head towards Santo Domingo.
One trip I would highly recommend is a boat-trip, with a great opportunity to view the island from a different stand-point, and really take in the coastline’s beauty. Definitely remember the camera for this one, and plenty of sun-cream and a hat!
It’s not all lying in the sun however, the island has numerous national parks and nature reserves, so nature is high up on the agenda. Why not indulge in a spot of whale watching? Or alternatively, head into the rainforest on a guided tour and see what you can spot.
The island is famous for nightlife – a great excuse to dance the night away. Before you head out to party however, be sure to line your stomach with some delicious Dominican food. Give some of the fresh sea food a try. If that doesn’t sound like your idea of fun, then there are plenty of international menus available for everyone, so nobody will go hungry!
The Dominican has so much to offer, it’s hard to fit it all into this piece. For something a little different from all the other Caribbean islands, I’d highly recommend it, with plenty for the action seeker, as well as those wanting to relax. Save money wherever possible with pre-booking airport extras prior to travelling and you’ll head out with more money to spend guilt-free in duty free – what could be better?! Check out parking at east midlands airport when flying regionally and see what deals you can find.
Action, adventure, relaxation and idyllic surroundings – what more could you want?
